In addition to lucrative fishing deals, Morocco is taking advantage of the fact that Western Sahara territory is extremely rich in phosphate. More precisely, with the country’s occupation of Western Sahara today, Morocco controls about 72 percent of the world’s phosphate resources.

Phosphate is only found in a limited amount in the world and is an extremely important fertilizer on which the entire world’s food production depends.

As the American magazine The Atlantic describes, the world would not be able to feed itself if it were not for phosphate from Morocco’s occupied territories.
