As can be seen in the first picture here, the sand in Iceland is black. These are volcanic remnants. Soft grains of sand by the water. When the volcano exploded, airspace was filled with dust clouds of pointed small crystals.

“On April 14, 2010, an Icelandic volcano seriously got the island nation on the world map.

The day was the starting shot on an ash cloud, which canceled over 100,000 flights and left passengers stranded at 313 airports.

Tons of small ash particles were hurled from Eyjafjallajökull and over ten kilometers into the atmosphere.

Fear of the impact of volcanic ash on jet engines closed the airspace over Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Norway, the United Kingdom and Ireland on 15 April 2010 “
