The slavefortress in Ghana testifies to the Danes’ gloomy past as a colonial power.

In the years 1650-1857, 300,000 African souls were transported via 333 voyages from the Gold Coast to the Danish West Indies, St. Thomas, writes Thorkild Hansen in his book »Slavernes Kyst«. He sets the number high, because usually two slaves died for every one who survived the long journey, frequent punishments and internal slave confilcts. In return, the Africans were given weapons and alcohol that only exacerbated the conflicts between the African chiefs and extended the lucrative slave trade for two centuries.
